Clay's passion for working on cars started at the age of five, where he played around with model cars. After a short stint in the military, Clay worked part-time in his friend's sign shop while he attended the Bloomfield School of Sign Craft. In 1977, he quit his day job and started painting cars full-time. Pinstriping straight lines for local car dealerships soon became White's niche and he subsequently opened Clay Designs in 1980. He also performs custom painting on motorcycles, but his main focus is pinstriping.
